Please, Papa ~ Picture Book & KID KANDY
Please, Papa
By Kate Banks
Pictures by Gabi Swiatkowska
(Frances Foster Books, 2013)
Calm, old-fashioned illustrations tell the story of Alice and her attempts to build (and populate) a farm in the middle of her bedroom.
Please, Papa is an adorable story of Alice, a young child, who uses her imagination to play and create. In her real life, Alice learns the importance of using manners and saying, "Please." Farm animals are added two her barnyard, but when it comes to a horse, there is none to be found. Using her manners, Alice finds a way to get a horse.
Readers will be delighted at Alice and her interactions with her family, her play time, and her creative play. I love the feel the illustrations lend to the simple text.
KID KANDY:
Build a Farm in Your Bedroom
Can you be like Alice and build a farm?
~ Dig out the barn (or build one).
~ Does your farm need a tractor or people?
~ Add some animals (or ask for some - are they real or imagined?).
~ Use your manners when asking for something and playing with others.
~ Do you need to pretend about some animals like Alice? Which animals?
~ Don't forget to feed the animals!
Thank you for playing!

Duck on a Bike - Wacky Wednesday Picture Book & KID KANDY
Duck on a Bike
By David Shannon
(Scholastic Inc., 2002)
Have you seen a duck on a bike? Sounds like a Wacky Wednesday feature to me. Let's read Duck on a Bike, shall we?
Duck got a wild idea and decided to go on a bicycle joy ride around the farm. As Duck passed other farm animals, each one mentally expressed varying opinions of duck on the bike. But after a group of children arrived on their bikes, dashed inside, and left the bicycles unattended, well . . . one can only imagine what happens next!
I've never seen a duck on a bike. But wouldn't that be a fun thing?
KID KANDY:
Go for a Bike Ride
After reading Duck on a Bike, put on your helmet and go out for a bicycle ride. Consider the thoughts of the different animals. Do they apply to your bike ride? Which animal are you most like? Why?
Pretend for just a bit. If you could see ANY animal riding a bike, which one would it be? Draw me a picture. I would love to see that, too!

Our Farm
Our Farm, By the Animals of Farm Sanctuary is a beautiful book.
The imaginative poems are penned by Maya Gottfried and the life like paintings are by Robert Rahway Zakanitch. I just found this book listed on Amazon, but learned about it through my local library where I was checking out books for our farm theme.
Different artistic methods render endearingly sweet illustrations of farm animals. Each animal is represented by a hand-crafted poem perfectly sounding as if written by each particular animal. The animal 'voice' for each critter is funny and winsome and fits what we think farm animals are like in their actions and personality.
Kindergarteners loved the illustrations although some of the funny parts were above their heads. Still, this book is a delight to read and look at and laugh with.
Recommended by a youngster at heart.
